there is no shortage of fuel like there was in the 70's. the price is going up because of speculators in the stock market.

Rationing in the 1970's was a disaster. I can't imagine any thoughtful person would try it again.

No. There is no need for it until there is a major shortage of gas.

No. Not unless there is a serious bottleneck in the supply chain that could be caused by a major Katrina-like hurricane taking out refineries and platforms in the gulf. Or war with Iran. With the supply reduced, you would need rationing to spread out demand.

The only type of "Ration" that would work is a sliding scale. ie. Every driver can get 500 gallons at $3.00/gallon. You can receive an additional 500 gallons, but the price goes to $4.00/gallon. The next 500 gallons goes to $5.00/gallon, etc.... This way each person can get all the gas they want, however there is a major reward to conserv. This would be based on the driver's license. You would slide your license at the pump, and the "system" would then determine the price per gallon. I still prefer to let the market determine the price (let economics works)

The only time the USA did rationing (nation wide) was during WWII. But what happened then (as would happen if it were to happen now) an instant black market would form. People would barter for gas rations. Let the free market take care of the issue. If the price went to $10/gallon, people would cut back. The problem with rationing is determining how many gallons each family gets. I work from home, and my family only puts a total of 12,000 miles on all three vehicals each year. Would I get more gas rations than I need? What about the guy who has to travel 200 miles a day for his job? Gov't doesn't do a good job figuring this stuff out.

no. but i would rather see them ration the fuel than see the prices go sky high. then your doing the same thing as ration the gas. people will have to shut down their vehicles. so it might as well be with rationing the gas. and maybe the gas will stay at a price that the poor people can at least have an chance of getting some gas for their vehicles.
