I'm on my fifth Dakota.

2011 quad cab, 4.7V8, 2wd, 3.92 gear.

I don't like it as much as my 2000 or 2003. Those felt sportier and smaller. Definately got better gas mileage with the same 4.7V8 since they just weren't as fat as the new ones.

Overall I like it. Still not as big as an F series....

Still have my 1989, bought it new. 140,000 miles, 2 sets of tires/brakes, a fuel pump and a starter. My little 135 hp V6 has pulled/hauled more than a lot of 300 hp "big" pickups, might just take me a little longer to get there...

1998 3.9l Dakota.
Nephew's truck.
Sitting in my backyard for 4 months with a locked up engine due to the crappy oiling system, and his "mechanic's" neglect to change the oil filter.

I still have my 2000 model club cab with the 4.7 and auto. Has about 210,000 on it now. I just picked up an 2003 regular cab sport with the 4.7 and a 5-speed manual. Fun to drive. Great little trucks.

Dodge really does need to go back to the original intent. Regular cab option, reduce the size and mass.

Mine is a 1999 Sport reg. Cab, 3.9L V6, 5sp manual, with 132,000 miles. I love the size, tuning radius and the handling. Summer weather, I consistently get 25 MPG, cold weather MPG slips to 21.

My son had a 92 reg. cab SLT 4x4. Was another great truck, but the V8 was shoehorned in, made it a real task to even change the oil filter. It was Totalled when a car slid into his lane, avoiding someone else who made an improper left turn.

Had a 92 with a 318. Best truck I've had. It suffered punishment most full sized half tons would stall at. I now have an 08 with a 3.7L. The fuel mileage is not what I expected, not even close the window sticker(dismal). I has so far been a good truck.

I have a 97 Dakota, regular cab, 2WD, 3.9 V6, 5 speed, runs on propane. I have an 83 gallon tank ( at 80% it holds 66 gallons ) in the bed that gives it a range 1000 - 1300 miles, depending on conditions. It has 210,000 miles on it and runs great. An 80 year old man owned it before me and every panel is scratched or dented. I gave $700 for it and converted it to propane.

Bill.G;
I believe Dodge should re-invent the Dakota, make it into a small truck again, bring back the regular cab and offer a cheap Sport model with a V-6.
They used to offer them like this, really popular.

1992 2wd club cab type with greater then 325,000 miles on it. Just had to replace the sway bar clamps, they were very hard to find. Had to go to the junk yard to pull off. Dealer and auto parts stores did not have the item.

I had a '97 shortbed regular-cab 4x4 with the 318 and 5-speed manual. It was a fantastic truck and was unstoppable in the snow & ice. Only got 12-13 MPGs though! That was one reason I got rid of it a few years ago. And I still don't believe that Dodge got rid of the normal-sized (regular) cab body on these trucks. That was dumb, IMHO.

I had an 02 Sport, Quad Cab 4.7 2wd. I ordered it new. Loved the truck. Wasn't thrilled with the gas mileage. Had 45,000 when I sold it.

Now I have an 08 Sport, Crew Cab 4.7 4wd. Also ordered it. Truck's OK. Mileage is much better even being 4wd, the new 4.7 has tons more power. Most uncomfortable seats in the world. Currently has around 1,400 miles.

Would love to put the 08 drive train in the 02 body. Then I'd have a much better looking truck with comfortable seats and tons of power.

I don't have one now, but I did have a 1987 Dodge Dakota at one time, and the first thing I did was to improve the fuel economy of it as I always do with every vehicle I've owned in life. 3.8 liter V-6, automatic. Was able to get about 10 to 12% better mileage with minor modifications.

Still have my 2000 4.7 club cab. I'm at 192,000 miles now on original drivetrain. Replaced the alternator at about 180,000 miles. Still using original O2 sensors, water pump, battery, etc... Did the ball joints about 130,000 miles I think and shocks at about 150,000 miles. Other than brakes, tires, fluids and filters it has been the best damn truck I've ever owned.

Hi, I have a 2006 Dakota with a 4.7L (302 I think) V8. I tow a 2 horse bumper pull trailer with one horse. I have been from upper PA to southeastern Va (Va Beach Va) and it did not overheat and did great. The gas mileage is not very good compared to my 2000 Gran Marquis (I bought the truck to tow my horse) as I get around 14-16 in traffic in Norfolk and around 18 on the Interstate.

I do have a rattle in the dash and took it to my local dealer (I have 32K on it and its under warranty) and they let me watch them take apart the dash all the way down including the ac ductwork. The found some pennies and stuff (it was a Enterprise rent a car when I bought it 3 months ago) but the vibration is still there at a low speed when accelerating up to about 35 mph. Otherwise I love the truck. Handles great.

Richard in Chesapeake Va

PS - anyone local recommend a good mechanic? I live near the NC state line also. Thanks

2001 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab. 4.7 Liter v8 90,000 miles. I love this truck. Its in great condition. I have not had anything wrong with it except 3 of the O2 censors. I replace 1 the other two under warranty. I change oil between 7500 and 1500 miles use mobile one and mobile one filters. I changed the spark plugs every 25,000 miles. It will only run 98 mph before the cut off hits in. 14 to 16 mpg in city and around 18 if I keep it under 70 on the interstate. This is my third Dakota got a new 1991 with a 318 v8. Got a over spay coating at work all over it. It was a white truck but I make the paint company buy me a new tuck because I only had 600 miles on it when they did it. I then reorder a v6 club cab that had tow tone paint job it took the dealer until July (9) months to fine the truck for me while we drove the white one. Put 17k miles on there truck while I waited for my new on. Put 165k on my second 91 Dakota. Had to sell it for new room for the new baby.

White '94 SLT club cab, 3.9, 320,000+ miles (167,000 when I bought him in March '02), and his birthday's coming up in March!
(Yeah, I'm weird about my truck, what of it?)
There's not a straight panel on the truck and wasn't when he was put in the auction. I tried to keep the rust at bay but got overwhelmed. He's getting moody but runs great when he feels like it; other times he dies in traffic for no reason. But even when the transmission went out (after carrying a 2,200-pound load in the bed a few weeks before) he tried valiantly to make it home and didn't totally lock up until in the garage.
When my youngest boy's old enough to drive, it'll be his truck, poor boy. It was his choice though and now we're both hoping "Overhaulin'" will come to Kansas City. ;)

Well that 2003 Dakota I bought 1 1/2 months ago...... My son put it into a ditch a week ago. Screwed up the front suspension & bent the frame. Now it is a pile of parts. I am going to be taking it apart & selling off the parts to make back the money he owes me for that truck. Bed is fine & engine runs great. It only had about 55,000 miles on it. let me know if anyone is interested in some of the parts. E-Mail(Tom) bigcahunah1@juno.com
